Meet the Real ‘Britomart’: A Quarry Veteran Turned Preservation Star
Delivered in 1899 from the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds, ‘Britomart’ was the first of three Quarry Hunslets built for the Pen-yr-Orsedd Quarry in the Nantlle Valley. Named after a heroine from Edmund Spenser’s "The Faerie Queene", she served faithfully for over six decades before being rescued by a passionate group of Ffestiniog Railway workers and volunteers.
In 1965, ‘Britomart’ found new life on the Ffestiniog Railway, returning to steam in 1966. Her gleaming blue livery, inspired by the Great Northern Railway of Ireland, makes her a standout among preserved narrow gauge engines. She remains in operational condition today, delighting visitors and railway enthusiasts from around the world.
