The OO9 scale models of the Quarry Hunslet locomotives, first introduced in late 2022 as part of the Bachmann Narrow Gauge range, were an instant hit, selling out within months. After countless requests for their return, we’re thrilled to announce that new versions of ‘Alice’ and ‘Britomart’ are on their way! Now is the perfect time to explore these exquisite models and see why they captured the hearts of collectors everywhere.

Despite their compact size, these locomotives are packed with incredible detail and craftsmanship. Featuring a diecast boiler surrounded by a finely detailed cab, each model boasts separate components such as handrails, valves, springs, and chimneys. Both open and enclosed cab variants are available, with fully decorated cab controls for added authenticity.

The diecast running plate and angled frames enhance durability, while the authentically profiled wheels with metal bearings ensure smooth and reliable performance. Unique features include dumb buffers on ‘Alice,’ supplied in two lengths for customization, and piston access holes on ‘Britomart’s’ front buffer beam. Shared features across both models include:

The Quarry Hunslets were originally built by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds starting in the 1880s. Designed for slate quarrying operations at sites like Penrhyn, Dinorwic, and Dorothea Quarries, these hardworking locomotives served well into the 20th century, with ‘Holy War’ being the last to retire in 1967.

391-050 Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0 Tank ‘Alice’ Dinorwic Quarry Red

Our first model depicts ‘Alice’ which today can be found preserved at the Bala Lake Railway. The Bachmann Narrow Gauge model of ‘Alice’ is decorated in the Dinorwic Quarry’s red liveryand has an open cab and tool rests that are mounted to the top of the tank. There is a single smokebox-mounted lubricator and a blower supply is fitted on the left hand side. The bufferbeam features dumb buffers.

391-051 Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0 Tank ‘Alice’ Dinorwic Quarry Red

The second model is ‘Britomart’, which is decorated in the Pen-yr-Orsedd Quarry’s bluelivery. ‘Britomart’ features an early-type enclosed cab which has a whistle mounted to the front and a roof that has been modified to fit the loading gauge of the Ffestiniog Railway where the locomotive now resides. The smokebox has lubricators mounted on both sides and the blower supply is fitted on the right hand side, whilst there is an optional toolbox that can be fitted to the top of the tank and the front bufferbeam features holes to access the pistons.
