Hornby LMS Streamlined Coronation Class 6247 ‘City of Liverpool’ – WWII 80th Anniversary Model
Hornby’s LMS Streamlined Coronation Class 6247 ‘City of Liverpool’, finished in black wartime livery, is part of the WWII 80th Anniversary Collection. This model pays tribute to one of Sir William Stanier’s most notable express locomotives from the Second World War era. Designed to 00 scale, it is equipped with a 21-pin DCC socket, enabling straightforward digital upgrades for improved performance and operational control. Featuring its distinctive streamlined design and wartime appearance, the model stands out as a significant addition to any steam-era railway layout.
The original locomotive was built at Crewe Works and entered service in September 1943, complete with full ‘bathtub’ streamlining. It was allocated to Camden shed and used for hauling express services between London Euston and Glasgow. As was standard wartime practice, it was delivered in plain black livery. In June 1947, the streamlined casing was removed, and the engine was modified with smoke deflectors and repainted in lined black LMS livery. The sloping ‘semi’ smokebox remained in place until its eventual replacement in September 1956.
The locomotive was withdrawn from service at Carlisle Kingmoor depot in June 1963 under the number BR lined maroon 46427 and was subsequently scrapped in July of that year.
