Hornby LNER Class A3 103 ‘Flying Scotsman’ – WWII 80th Anniversary Model
The LNER Class A3 103 ‘Flying Scotsman’, one of the most iconic steam locomotives in the world, is featured in Hornby’s WWII 80th Anniversary Collection. Presented in its distinctive wartime black livery, this 00 gauge model is DCC-ready with a 21-pin socket, enabling full compatibility with modern digital control systems. Additional features include a diecast running plate and a flickering firebox, enhancing the model’s realism and making it a standout addition to any steam-era layout.
The original ‘Flying Scotsman’ was completed in February 1923 and entered service in LNER apple green livery, carrying the GNR number 1472. It later adopted its most recognized number, 4472, and was repainted in plain black during April 1943 to reflect wartime austerity measures. In January 1946, it was renumbered 502, and then changed again to 103 in May of the same year. Following a rebuild to A3 specifications, it re-entered service in apple green in January 1947.
Under British Railways in March 1948, it was temporarily renumbered as E103 before receiving its final designation, 60103, in December 1948. The locomotive was painted BR blue in 1949, and then received its final livery of BR lined green in March 1952.
