Hornby SR Merchant Navy Class 21C9 ‘Shaw Savill’ – WWII 80th Anniversary Model
The SR Merchant Navy Class 21C9 ‘Shaw Savill’, finished in wartime black livery, is featured in Hornby’s WWII 80th Anniversary Collection. This 00 gauge model, notable for its sleek appearance and engineering significance, is equipped with a 21-pin DCC socket, enabling compatibility with modern digital control systems. The model reflects both historical importance and distinctive design, making it a valuable addition for collectors and model railway enthusiasts with an interest in wartime steam locomotives.
The original locomotive was constructed at Eastleigh Works and entered service in July 1942. Designed by Oliver Bulleid, it was one of his air-smoothed ‘Pacific’ class locomotives. The engine was named after the Shaw Savill Line, a prominent merchant shipping company based in London. Upon introduction, it was finished in Southern Railway black and adorned with green-shaded ‘Sunshine’ lettering. Following the end of World War II, the locomotive was repainted in malachite green.
In August 1949, following nationalisation, it was renumbered 35009 under British Railways. The locomotive was rebuilt in 1957 to a more conventional design, reflecting a shift away from the original streamlined casing. It was later assigned to Exmouth Junction depot and was officially withdrawn from service in September 1964.
