A Rich and Varied Service Life

Originally entering service in 1880 as LB&SCR No. 78 ‘Knowle’, this locomotive was rebuilt to A1X specification in 1911, later becoming No. 678 under Southern Railway ownership. In May 1929, it crossed to the Isle of Wight, receiving the number W14 and the name ‘Bembridge’, the condition faithfully depicted in this Hornby model.

After returning to the mainland in 1936, the engine—now renumbered 2678—worked on the Hayling Island branchbefore being loaned to the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Under British Railways, it became 32678 and eventually returned to Hayling Island from 1958 to 1961, finishing its working life at Newhaven Harbour before withdrawal in 1963.

Preserved after a period on display at Butlins, Minehead, this remarkable engine was acquired by the Terrier Trust, restored to steam in 2000, and now operates at the Kent & East Sussex Railway, continuing to delight generations of steam fans.
